These projects were all developed as an alternative to natural gas and to future-proof the heat supply. KARA builds the heating system and connects it to a distribution station within the city's heating network. Smart technical heat recovery solutions, such as an economizer and a condenser, allow for extra efficient use of the biomass.

Types of biomass suitable for district heating are diverse and energy-rich. Besides wood waste and agricultural residues, other organic materials such as pruning waste, grass clippings, and agricultural waste streams can also be used. These materials are locally available and have a high energy value, making them highly suitable for energy production. In many cases, this is also the result of strong local collaboration, ensuring the efficient use of locally available resources.
