Steam and electricity

Our client in the Netherlands produces wood fibers and wood pellets. They wanted to make their production more sustainable and were looking for a way to generate their own energy—not just heat, but also electricity. They also wanted to use residual heat as efficiently as possible and, of course, meet all environmental requirements. They decided to use wood waste from the immediate area and convert it into sustainable heat.

The steam is used for two purposes:

  • The steam goes to turbine to generate electricity (about 1.2 MW).
  • The residual heat that remains is converted into hot water for drying their products.

The challenge

  • Generating sustainable heat with biomass (instead of fossil fuel)
  • You can also generate electricity for your own use
  • Efficient use of energy
  • Comply with legal requirements for emissions of substances such as nitrogen and particulate matter

Our solution

We supplied and connected a complete biomass system for our client. Because the biomass is moist, the system was modified accordingly, including the use of a sloped grate to pre-dry the biomass. KARA also included all steam-side connections in the scope of delivery, including the turbine, degasser, and condenser.

PROJECT FEATURES

  • Installation of a steam boiler for combined heat and power generation
  • Hot water output of 6.5 MW for belt dryers in the production process
  • Turbine for electricity generation with a capacity of approximately 1.2 MW
  • Boiler feedwater economizer for efficiency increase of approximately 400 kW
  • Combustion of local biomass (wood chips with 50% moisture)
  • Flue gas cleaning via multicyclone, cloth filter and catalyst (incl. urea injection)
  • Emission reduction meets strict legal requirements for dust and nitrogen
  • Smart use of residual heat for process optimization and cost savings
  • Including all steam-side and water-side connections (condenser, degasser, etc.)
