Biomass combustion plant

For a client in the United Kingdom, KARA realized a thermal oil biomass combustion plant with a capacity of 3.3 MW (302 – 250 °C). Wood dust is used as fuel in this plant. Although wood dust is a sustainable biomass , this application presents specific technical challenges. Therefore, this project called for a well-thought-out and safe design.

With the KARA installation, the combustion process is continuously monitored and precisely controlled. For instance, the wood dust is supplied in a controlled manner and deposited onto the combustion grate. This results in stable and safe combustion. Moreover, this approach contributes to a reliable heat supply for the production process.

Hookah cooling screen

Furthermore, because very dry biomass is used, a water pipe cooling screen is integrated into the firebox. This keeps the temperature in the combustion chamber under control. Additionally, this solution prevents unwanted temperature peaks. In this way, the water pipe cooling screen contributes to a safe, efficient, and stable combustion process.

Multi-cycle filter and cloth filter

Immediately after the boiler, the flue gases pass through a thermal oil economizer, which utilizes the residual heat to increase the system's efficiency. This economizer is equipped with a pneumatic cleaning system that automatically keeps the tubes free of dust deposits.

 

For the flue gas cleaning, a combination of a multi-cyclone filter and a fabric filter was chosen. To meet nitrogen emission standards, a urea injection system (SNCR) was also used. The combustion chamber is designed to allow sufficient flue gas retention time to ensure optimal reaction between the urea and nitrogen oxides.

Hot water economizer

After cleaning, the flue gases still have a relatively high temperature. To utilize this residual heat effectively, a hot water economizer has been integrated into the customer's heating circuit. This significantly increases the overall energy efficiency of the system and provides an additional 850 kW of hot water.

Biomass supply
The dry wood dust is fed in a controlled manner via a worm system. This ensures a constant and safe fuel supply to the firebox, which is essential for the smooth running of the process.
Biomass logistics
Precise dosing and guidance of the dust to the combustion grate prevents spraying and guarantees a homogeneous combustion process.
Biomass combustion
The firebox features a flat grate with a water pipe cooling screen. This prevents overheating and allows the high temperature of dry biomass to be utilized in a controlled manner, with maximum safety and efficiency.
Flue gas cleaning
The system is equipped with a multi-cyclone and fabric filter for dust removal. An SNCR system ensures NOx reduction through urea injection, optimized by sufficient flue gas retention time in the combustion chamber.
Residual heat utilization
A thermal oil economizer utilizes the residual heat immediately after the boiler. Additionally, a hot water economizer is integrated into the customer's heating circuit, generating an additional 850 kW of usable heat.

KARA developed a system for an industrial wood processor in the UK that converts wood dust into thermal oil with a capacity of 3.3 MW. Thanks to the clever integration of flue gas cleaning and residual heat utilization, the system also provides 850 kW of hot water – fully emission-focused and highly efficient.
