Murray Timber Group shifts to sustainability with biomass plant

Murray Timber Group, a sawmill in Ireland, aims to become independent of fossil fuels and appeal to the entire supply chain, from forest owners to consumers. By using waste wood from its own processes to heat state-of-the-art drying kilns, they aim to reduce costs and make their core business more sustainable. To achieve this, they opted for a bioenergy installation from KARA Energy Systems.

Innovative Energy Solution for Sawmill

ECC Timber is improving its energy efficiency and sustainability with a new bioenergy plant that produces 8 MW of hot water. This plant uses waste wood from the production process to heat 15 drying kilns, ensuring efficient and environmentally friendly heat generation.
Biomass combustion
The biomass, consisting of bark, chips, sawdust, and wood shavings, is burned in an efficient boiler specifically designed for this type of fuel, with a moisture content of up to 58%. This ensures high energy density and clean combustion with minimal emissions.
Biomass logistics
Biomass storage and distribution takes place via a system of moving floors and scraper chain conveyors, designed for an efficient and uninterrupted supply of fuel to the boiler's combustion chamber. Large pieces of waste wood are separated and shredded for use as biomass.
Biomass output
The bioenergy plant's output consists of 8 MW of hot water (105°C), which is used to heat 12 drying chambers. The plant operates at full load for 8,000 hours per year.
Flue gas cleaning
The combustion flue gases are cleaned using a multi-cyclone filter. These filters minimize harmful emissions and ensure that the system meets strict environmental standards.
Drying rooms Bes Bollmann
A state-of-the-art drying solution that respects the existing drying rooms, perfectly matching Murray's ambitions for the future. Smart, fast, inventive, top-quality products, energy-efficient, and with an attractive footprint. Now that's a top result.
