Straw as biomass

A special project KARA has completed is the installation at Furajny Hrany, a leading animal feed producer in Bulgaria. What makes this project unique is the innovative use of straw as biomass for steam production.

The first installation (2.3 MW) was successfully completed in 2017. Following positive results, Furanji later opted for a second KARA installation (3.4 MW). The straw used is a residual product from their own production process, allowing the company to make its energy supply more sustainable and make optimal use of residual flows.

Furajny Hrany approached KARA to inquire about the potential use of straw as biomass for steam production. After thorough research, we developed a customized concept to successfully implement the entire process – from logistics to flue gas cleaning. Our scope of supply included a cutter, chopper, and filter, optimally preparing the straw for combustion. This ensures both plants are supplied with fuel efficiently and sustainably.

Thanks to this collaboration, Furanji Hrany Ltd. has taken an innovative step towards making its energy supply more sustainable.

STRAW AS BIOMASS

PROJECT FEATURES

  • Installation of a second steam boiler with a capacity of 3.4 MW
  • Total steam production increases from 3.4 t/h to 8.5 t/h
  • Use of straw as fuel, sourced from our own fields
  • Complete flue gas cleaning with cyclone and E-filters
  • No gas use since first installation

Straw as biomass

The drawing below shows KARA's scope of supply. Besides the biomass plant itself, the logistics process involved in KARA's delivery also included a conveyor belt, cutter, hammer mill, filter, and intermediate bunker for preparing the straw feed. The straw itself is sourced from the company's own fields.
Biomass combustion
The biomass, consisting of straw, is burned in an efficient boiler designed to use straw as fuel. This ensures high energy density and clean combustion with minimal emissions.
Biomass logistics
The storage and distribution of biomass is carried out via a system of worms and conveyor belts, with a fuel preparation line for both installations.
Biomass output
The output consists of hot water and steam, with a total steam capacity of 8.5 T/h.
Flue gas cleaning
The flue gases are cleaned using Cyclone and E-filters, which ensures minimal emissions and compliance with environmental standards.
