Sustainable Wood Boilers for District Heating

Our client, Stadsverwarming Nederland, was looking for an efficient and sustainable solution for generating green heat for the district heating network in the Central Netherlands. Therefore, KARA realized a district heating biomass installation that supplies the required heat for more than 8,000 operating hours per year. In addition, a hot water economizer and a flue gas condenser significantly increase the efficiency of the installation.

KARA also handled the connection to the urban heat network using heat exchangers. Moreover, the installation meets the strict NOx emission requirement of 20 mg/Nm³. This is achieved thanks to an optimized combustion chamber design in combination with an SNCR and SCR system.

Furthermore, the concept consists of two biomass boilers, resulting in high operational flexibility. When heat demand decreases, one boiler can be completely switched off while the other continues to operate at a minimum load. As a result, the total minimum load is lower than with a single large boiler. This ensures that the installation continues to function efficiently and reliably, even with fluctuating heat demand.

The district heating system is being optimized with two new hot water boilers that together produce 14.6 MW. This installation is designed for high efficiency and environmental friendliness, featuring a hot water economizer and flue gas condenser. The boilers use wood chips as biomass and ensure reliable heat generation.
Biomass combustion
The biomass, consisting of wood chips with a moisture content of 55%, is burned in efficient boilers specifically designed for this type of fuel. This ensures high energy density and clean combustion with minimal emissions.
Biomass logistics
The biomass is stored and distributed via a system of slides and moving floors. This logistics system is designed for an efficient and uninterrupted supply of wood chips to the boiler combustion chambers.
Biomass output
The plant's output consists of hot water with a total capacity of 14.6 MW, including a hot water economizer and flue gas condenser for increased efficiency. This hot water is used for the district heating network.
Flue gas cleaning
The combustion flue gases are effectively cleaned using a multi-cyclone and fabric filter. These filters minimize harmful emissions and ensure that the system meets strict environmental standards.
