Sustainable District Heating Netherlands

Our client, District Heating Netherlands, needs an efficient and sustainable solution for generating steam, electricity, and hot water. The system comprises a 6.2 MW steam boiler (20 bar), a 0.3 MW economizer for boiler feedwater, and a 0.8 MW economizer for hot water. The steam is used for an external customer and for two turbines (600 kWe) to generate electricity. The remaining condensate is used for district heating. The system has an electrical efficiency of more than 8% relative to the thermal output and is designed for more than 8,000 operating hours per year.

Efficiency is increased by the use of a hot water economizer and a boiler feedwater economizer. KARA also supplies the connections to the city's heating network and all other water-side and steam-side connections. The system meets the NOx requirement of 145 mg/Nm³ through an optimal combustion chamber design combined with SNCR and SCR systems.

Biomass combustion
The biomass, consisting of wood chips with a moisture content of 55%, is burned in an efficient boiler specifically designed for this type of fuel. This ensures high energy density and clean combustion with minimal emissions.
Biomass logistics
The biomass is stored and distributed via a system of slides and a moving floor. This logistics system is designed for an efficient and uninterrupted supply of wood chips to the boiler's combustion chamber.
Biomass output
The plant's output consists of 6.2 MW of steam, 7.4 MW of hot water, and 600 kWe of electricity. This is achieved through the use of economizers and an advanced flue gas cleaning system.
Flue gas cleaning
The combustion flue gases are effectively cleaned using a multi-cyclone and fabric filter. These filters minimize harmful emissions and ensure that the system meets strict environmental standards.
