In Lovech, Bulgaria, Furajni Hrany has officially opened Boiler House No. 2. With this, KARA Future Energy Systems reaches a new milestone in a collaboration that has lasted nearly ten years.

In 2017, KARA installed the first biomass plant at the Furajni Hrany production site. This plant uses straw as a renewable fuel. Almost ten years later, Furajni Hrany now also has a second KARA biomass plant in operation.

KARA CEO Robert Reinders, Willy Bijen, and Arthur den Hartog, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bulgaria, were present at the official opening.

From local straw to sustainable energy

This project distinguishes itself primarily through its circular approach. Furajni Hrany grows ingredients for the production of dog and cat food on its own farmland. Straw remains as a residual stream.

Instead of letting this straw go to waste, the company uses this local biomass as fuel. The KARA biomass plants then convert the straw into energy for its own production process.

As a result, Furajni Hrany has significantly reduced its dependence on natural gas. Moreover, the company produces with a very low CO₂ footprint and utilizes a residual stream that is locally available.

This creates an almost completely circular process: Furajni Hrany grows the ingredients, produces animal feed, and uses the remaining straw for its own energy supply.

Almost ten years of collaboration

The second installation builds on the collaboration that KARA and Furajni Hrany started in 2017. The project demonstrates how companies can utilize local biomass residues to replace fossil fuels and make their production process more sustainable.

We are proud to have supported Furajni Hrany in this development for nearly ten years. With the official commissioning of the second KARA biomass plant, we are taking the next step together.

Congratulations to the entire Furajni Hrany team on this wonderful milestone!
