Internationally, hybrid energy systems are increasingly cited as an important step towards a future-proof heat supply. According to IEA Bioenergy, combinations of biomass with other sustainable technologies can help to better manage fluctuations in energy supply and demand.
In a hybrid installation, biomass can be deployed in a targeted manner, for example when other sources are less available. At the same time, technologies such as electric heat generation or thermal storage can absorb peaks and troughs. This allows solar energy to be utilized when it is abundantly available, while the biomass boiler is used when necessary. This ensures more efficient use of both systems.
An additional advantage is that the installation becomes less dependent on the maximum use of biomass. This can have a positive impact on maintenance, operational reliability, and the lifespan of the installation.
IEA Bioenergy also emphasizes that flexibility plays an increasingly important role in energy systems, especially now that electrification is increasing and grid congestion is becoming more frequent. Hybrid solutions can help to respond better to this.
