Limit emissions

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are one of the main concerns in biomass combustion. Unlike with fossil fuels, NOx here is largely formed from nitrogen already present in the fuel. According to IEA Bioenergy, only a portion of this is converted into NOx; the remainder stays behind in the ash or is converted into harmless nitrogen gas (N₂). 

 

This offers starting points for limiting emissions at the source. For instance, it appears that modifications to the combustion itself can have a significant impact. Examples include lower local flame temperatures, well-regulated oxygen supply, and phased combustion. In particular, the smart distribution of air and fuel (staging) can significantly reduce NOx formation—often without the need for additional downstream techniques. 

 

If further reduction is required, additional measures are possible. However, it is important that these align well with the overall system. Factors such as fuel quality and flue gas temperature play a major role in this. Applying only isolated 'end-of-pipe' solutions, without optimizing the combustion itself, often leads to higher costs and increased operational complexity in practice. 

 

The most important lesson from international studies (and KARA's own experience) is therefore that the greatest and most stable reductions are achieved by optimizing the entire system — from fuel selection to process control.
