European multi-million euro boost

The European Union is giving a substantial boost to the circular bio-economy with new funding instruments intended to accelerate the innovation and scaling up of sustainable bio-based technologies. At the end of January 2026, the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) announced that €172 million would be made available for 24 new innovation projects within the European bio-economy. This is evident from a recent report by Biomassafeiten.

 

The funding focuses on projects that contribute to the development and scaling up of bio-based materials, chemicals, and fuels. The goal is to make the European industry less dependent on fossil raw materials and international imports, while simultaneously strengthening circular value chains within Europe.

 

The investment round is part of the CBE JU work programme for 2026, a public-private partnership between the European Commission and the business community. Within this programme, the emphasis is on making better use of biomass residues, accelerating bio-industrial innovation, and scaling up technologies towards commercial application. According to Biomassafeiten, this approach aligns with broader European policy objectives regarding strategic autonomy, competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

 

For companies, technology developers, and knowledge institutions active in bioenergy and the bioeconomy, this funding boost offers concrete opportunities to further develop innovative concepts towards market introduction. The official call for proposals opens in April 2026 and closes in September 2026. Projects with a clear focus on scalability, efficient use of biomass, and integration into existing industrial chains have a strong starting position.

 

With this multi-million investment, the European Union underscores the importance of the circular bioeconomy as one of the pillars of the energy transition and the sustainability of industrial processes.
