Future-proof energy supply

The European bioeconomy plays an increasingly important role in strengthening Europe's energy security. By making smart use of biomass from agriculture, forestry, and organic waste streams, dependence on imported fossil fuels is reduced, and a more robust and sustainable energy system is created.

 

Bioenergy offers significant opportunities, particularly in industry. Where full electrification is not always feasible, biomass plants provide reliable heat, steam, and electricity. In doing so, they support energy-intensive production processes while simultaneously contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.

 

According to Bioenergy Europe, bioenergy must therefore be given a central place within the renewed European Bioeconomy Strategy. The organization advocates for policies that recognize bioenergy as an indispensable link within a circular economy. Four key priorities are central to this: replacing fossil fuels, accommodating regional differences in biomass and infrastructure, better utilization of local residual streams, and a greater role for biogenic CO₂ in industrial applications.

 

An important advantage of bioenergy is the availability of local raw materials. By-products from the timber, agricultural, and food industries can be used directly for sustainable energy generation. This increases security of supply, stimulates regional economies, and makes Europe less vulnerable to international energy crises.

 

The European Commission also underlines that the bioeconomy is essential for a competitive, circular, and climate-neutral economy. By efficiently utilizing sustainable biomass for both materials and energy, maximum value is created from available raw materials, without unnecessary waste.

 

For companies, this development means that investing in modern biomass and bioenergy systems contributes not only to the energy transition, but also to a stable, affordable, and future-proof energy supply.
